On 4 August 2020, Amazon officially announced that they have begun preparations to launch Amazon.se.
“Amazon has been supporting Swedish customers and selling partners across our different European stores for many years, but the next step is to bring a full retail offering to Sweden and we are making those plans now,”
– Alex Ootes, Vice President EU Expansion at Amazon
What does this mean for Danes?
We know that Amazon has, in recent years, been working towards launching a Danish version of Amazon.
Their decision to open in neighbouring Sweden means they are one step closer to making this a reality.
Amazon’s nearest fulfilment centre is currently located in Hamburg, with plans to open a new one just 50 km from the Danish-German border.
With the launch in Sweden, there is a possibility of a fulfilment centre even closer to eastern Denmark.
This could lead to faster and potentially cheaper delivery for Danish consumers.
It is important to mention that Danish customers have long been able to shop on Amazon via the British and German sites.
In fact, Amazon is already one of the largest online retailers in Denmark.
Amazon in Swedish
Back in December 2019, Amazon was recruiting Swedish translators, and now in August 2020 (around 8 months later), they have officially announced their launch in Sweden.
Amazon has not yet started recruiting Danish translators, so an official entry into Denmark is still some way off.
When Amazon arrives in Denmark, it will mean increased competition, especially within B2C, and will undoubtedly present a serious challenge for many online shops.
However, if you are a manufacturer or wholesaler, Amazon represents a major opportunity.
The marketplace allows you to use Amazon as a direct sales channel to consumers.
If you want to avoid the hassle of picking and packing, customer service and returns, you can manage everything through Amazon’s Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) service.

If you are already selling to other European countries as a wholesaler, you can benefit from selling through Amazon now.
This will also ensure you are ahead of the curve when Amazon fully launches in Denmark.
We have written an article to help you determine if Amazon is the right platform for you right here.
In any case, it will be interesting to follow the developments in Sweden.
This could provide a good indication of how the market will evolve when Amazon eventually opens in Denmark.
